About ISH

The International School of Helsinki is an IB World School authorized to offer International Baccalaureate programs to students aged 4 onwards in grades K1 to 12. Our mission is to provide excellence in education through a caring and diverse environment that encourages the holistic development of each student. We prepare students with the means to succeed in a challenging world .

Mission Statement from the ISH Strategic Plan

Perhaps the best way to describe ISH is to take a moment to investigate the meaning behind the words of the preceding mission statement. The mission reflects the school’s philosophy. Education is life-long learning which strives to maximize the potential of the individual as a responsible citizen within a holistic and global perspective. Learning is a collaborative process that promotes confident communication while respecting individuality and diversity.

The school has chosen the three programs of the International Baccalaureate (www.ibo.org) to bring its philosophy to life and put its mission into action. At the core of all three programs are the ten aspirational qualities of an IB learner. IB learners strive to be inquirers, thinkers, and communicators, risk takers, knowledgeable, principled, open-minded, caring, balanced, and reflective. Together, these ten qualities constitute the IB Learner Profile. It is these qualities that inspire and motivate the work of teachers, students and indeed the entire school community.

ISH is focused on maintaining an atmosphere where diversity is valued and viewed as a strength, where differences are seen as an asset. This focus is complemented by IB commitment to international-mindedness. The IB programs encourage students to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

The catalyst igniting the philosophies and concepts of the school and the IB into action is a core group of highly trained, dedicated, international staff. People who are student centered who are not just teaching about the IB Learner Profile but who are active practitioners of the qualities.

We are committed to the “holistic development of each student” while “respecting individuality and diversity”. This commitment is symbolized by the school logo, the ISH snowflake and articulated in the school motto, “ Each one is unique ”. The greatest strength of ISH lies in the continuing efforts to put these words and ideas into action, for without action they remain only words and ideas. In this strength also lies our greatest challenge.
