The International School of Helsinki wishes to accept all qualified applicants throughout the year provided the school can offer a suitable program of study for the applicant. Admission shall not be denied because of nationality, ethnicity, gender, or religious beliefs.
To be considered for admission an applicant must submit:
- A completed application form, an official transcript, written in English. The transcript is used to determine the student's potential for success at ISH and the student's educational needs. If the original transcript is not in English, a certified translation must also be provided.
- A letter of reference from the current school
- A valid permit for residence in Finland.
- Payment of the Registration Fee
In cases where a student successfully passes through the acceptance process but there is no available space for placement a waiting list is created. Students are placed on the waiting list in a first come first served manner. The first student placed on the list will then be eligible for the first opening at the level for which they were accepted.
There are several criteria considered when placing students. The alignment of the student’s previous system of education with that of ISH, the hemisphere from which the student was previously attending school, ability to interact in an English speaking environment and the previous grade placement are among the general points considered. In addition to these points there are specific criteria for certain levels.
- Students should be four on or before September 1 to enter Kindergarten One Program.
- Students should be five on or before September 1 to enter Kindergarten Two Program.
- Students should be six by September 1 to enter Grade One.
- Students applying for grades 11or 12 (IB diploma program) must have a sufficient command of the English language that would allow them to meet the requirements as stipulated by the IB Diploma Language B syllabus. (criteria available on school website)
The school reserves the right to make all final decisions on student placement.
